Book: Hell Yeah or No, “Saying Yes” by Derek Sivers

The Goal of This Post

To share bold ideas from the book Hell Yeah or No, by Derek Sivers; on how to live a meaningful and intentional life.

Part 7: Saying Yes

1. Goals Shape the Present, Not The Future

  • The future doesn’t exist. It’s only in your imagination. All that exists is the present moment.
  • Judge a goal by how well it changes your actions in the present moment.

On Bad Goals

  • A bad goal makes you say, “I want to do that someday”.
  • A bad goal is foggy, vague and distant.
  • A bad goal makes you say, “I’m not sure how to start”.

On Good Goals

  • A great goal makes you take action immediately.
  • A great goal is clear, specific, and close you can almost touch it.
  • With a great goal, you know exactly what needs to be done next.

Unless it changes your actions, right now, it’s not a great goal. Find another variation that excites you.

2. Seeking Inspiration

  • Breathe out. Nothing is truly inspiring unless you apply it to your work,
  • Inspiration is applying what you’ve received.
  • Pause the input and focus on your output. Constantly seeking inspiration is anti-inspiring.

For every bit of inspiration you take in, use it and amplify it by applying it to your work.

3. If You Haven’t Found Your Passion

  • You probably expect finding your passion to be overwhelming.
  • Instead, notice what excites you and what scares you on a small moment-to-moment level.

Grow by doing what excites you and what scares you.

4. Whatever Scares You, Go Do It

  • Fear is just a form of excitement, and you know you should do what excites you.
  • Once you do something that scares you, you’re not scared of it anymore.

Life is an ongoing process of choosing between safety and risk. Make the growth choice a dozen times a day. – Abraham Maslow
