Book: Hell Yeah or No, “Fix Faulty Thinking” by Derek Sivers

The Goal of This Post

To share bold ideas from the book Hell Yeah or No, by Derek Sivers; on how to live a meaningful and intentional life.

Part 6: Fix Faulty Thinking

1. Unlearn

  • Times have changed. Beliefs that were true are now false. Ways that used to work don’t work anymore.
  • We don’t get wise just by adding and adding. We also need to subtract.

We want to see the world clearly and know what’s what. But once we’re past the first stage of wisdom, the next stage involves adapting to new changes.

2. Subtract

  • It’s easy to think you need something else.
  • It’s hard to look instead at what to remove.

Subtracting reminds you that what you need to change is something already here, not out there.

3. Don’t Think Others are Stupid

  • Being smart means thinking things through.
  • Being stupid means avoiding thinking by jumping to conclusions.

When someone says, “They’re so stupid!” it means they’ve stopped thinking.

4. Moving for Good

  • If you keep experiencing the same things, your mind keeps its same patterns.
  • If you don’t flex, you lose your flexibility.

To get smarter, you need to get surprised, think in new ways, and deeply understand different perspectives.
