Book: Hell Yeah or No, “Updating Identity” by Derek Sivers

The Goal of This Post

To share bold ideas from the book Hell Yeah or No, by Derek Sivers; on how to live a meaningful and intentional life.

Part 1: Updating Identity

1. What if you didn’t need money or attention?

  • We do so many things for attention, to feel important or praised.
  • We do so many things for money, whether we need it or not.

What would you do if you didn’t need the money and didn’t need the attention?

2. Actions, not words, reveal our values

  • No matter what you say, your actions reveal the truth.
  • Your actions reveal your real values. Your actions show you what you actually want.

Admit your real priorities. Start doing what you say you want to do.

3. Keep earning your title, or it expires

  • Success comes from doing, not declaring.
  • Speak in the present tense about what you’re actually doing.

Be honest about what’s past and what’s present.

4. Why are you doing?

  • It’s crucial to know why you’re doing what you’re doing.
  • Once you realize what you really want and admit it, you need to pursue it.

You need to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. Know it in advance. Use it as your compass and optimize your life around it.

5. Character Predicts your Future

  • Character is the result of your little choices and little actions.
  • How you do anything is how you do everything. It matters.

Your actions are completely under your control, and seem to be the best indicator of future success.

6. Small Actions Change your Self-Identity

  • One little action changes how you think about yourself.
  • The world treats you as you treat yourself. Your actions show the world who you are.

You won’t act differently until you think of yourself differently. So start by taking one small action that will change your self-identity.
